This course has three foci¡G First, to develop each participant's skills in constructing her/his own ethical perspective in their decision making¡F Second, to introduce some of the important theoretical discourses and methodologies in ethics¡F And thirdly, to help develop a sensitivity towards current debates, including issues of economic justice, globalization, gender equality and environmental protection, and the creation of communities of justice and peace. We shall attempt to locate alternative models of social and community living to counter the values of hatred, alienation, and loss of meaning in life. The first six weeks will be devoted to the study of the theoretical discourse in ethics, while the latter part of the class devoted to the evaluation of the contemporary issues from an ethical perspective. |

Week1. Introduction. Why study ethics? Brief analysis of the present context to identify the relevance of a discourse on ethics. Week2. Understanding "Ethics", meaning of the term, differences between ethics and morality, origins of its thought and the history of its development. Different sources in doing Ethics. Relations of the branch of Ethics to other disciplines of study. Week3. Introduction to various Ethical Methodologies¡F differences between normative ethics and meta-ethics. - deontological ethics. Kantian formation of "categorical Imperatives" could be one of the primary models that we take in this class. Week4. Ethical Methodologies- 2. Introduction to teleological ethics, Theories of Utilitarianism, consequentialism and Utopia. We shall also discuss the notions of virtue, goodness and justice. Week5. Contextual Ethics. The "Responsibility model" presented by Reinhold Niebuhr and Care Ethics offered by the Feminist thought. Week6. Professional Ethics. Week7. Understanding Globalization¡G history of the development of the concept of globalization. Week8. Impact of globalization on human values. Week9. Ethical evaluation on the impact of globalization. Week10. Medical Ethics. Week11. Bio-ethics. Week12. Environmental ethics. Week13. Ethical debates regarding Global warming and its impact. Week14. Discussion on Environmental Ethics. We shall discuss the case of Tuvalu, a small island in the pacific as an example to evaluate the impact of global warming. Week15. Gender Ethics. Week16. War and Peace. Week17. 1. Four papers ¡]of approximately 4 pages¡^ on four specific issues will be the primary method for evaluation. Papers should be submitted on the following weeks¡F First paper on Week 5¡F second on week 9, third on week13¡F and the fourth on week 17. The topics for the papers will be given two weeks prior to the due date of each assignment. Each paper will be worth 20% of the total grade. [80%] 2. All students are expected to read the assigned reading materials before coming to class. An informed participation is expected from all students [20%] |

The class will be organized with a combination of integrative seminars and lectures¡F therefore, active, thoughtful, and informed participation of all members are expected. It is assumed that learning is not guaranteed by listening or reading, but mostly through informed discussion. Discussion activates the ability of critical thinking¡F hence it will be encouraged and insisted upon during lectures and some occasions where the class will split up into smaller discussion groups. Discussions will also have structured debates. |
